A new train station was opened in nearby White Sands on December 6, 1978; it served as an connection between Rockwall and San Antonio until it closed in 1984 due to budget cuts. The first store opened in Rockwall on October 14, 1909; it became known as the "Old Store". A second store opened on October 17, 1913; this one also became known as the "New Store". A restaurant started serving food from 1935 until 1977 when it merged with another local business to form the present-day Rockwall Cafe & Restaurant Ltd.; that business continues to operation today.
In 1836, the Texas Rangers were established to protect settlers in the area. The Rangers would become known as the "Rockwall Unit." In 1839, they fought a battle against Mexican forces at present-Day Mission San Antonio de Tlatelolco. In 1842, they apprehended John Brown and his followers during the raid on Harpers Ferry. In 1845, they fought a battle against Indians at Adobe Walls. The Rangers lost that battle but continued to fight skirmishes with the Indian tribes until their disbandment in 1865.
