In 1848, rock walls were built to prevent Comanche and Kiowa warriors from raiding passing travelers and livestock along the Sabine River. In 1862, General John Fetterman ordered an attack against Comanches near Sinton when he learned they had been raiding Texans for food and supplies. The defenders of Rockwall repelled anattack that would have resulted in many fatalities or losses among both sides. Rockwall was incorporated as a town on November 6, 1903; it became a municipality on December 1, 1907. On February 9, 1915 (just one day before World War I began), Confederate General Robert Ewell sent fourteen cannonballs into downtownRockwall during his raid against Fort Worth; no injuries were reported but property damage was extensive! During World War II: 1) local residents helped defense their community by manufacturing munitions from materials available within their homes2) When Japanese forces occupied Texas during World War II they requisitioned large quantities of goods from local farmers3) After Japan's surrender most citizens chose to support United States goals rather than Nazi Germany

Rockwall was founded in 1872 by James Bowie and his brother, John. The town was named for a rock wall that stood near the original site of the current-day Rockwall County courthouse. The Bowie brothers were among the first settlers in what is now Rockwall County. They erected a log cabin on the edge of a hill overlooking present-day Rocksville, Texas. The Bowie brothers also built a small mill and store in Rockwall, which continued to operate until the early 1900s. In 1881, John Bowie married Sarah Worth and they moved to San Antonio where he became mayor of that city from 1886 to 1888. In 1890, James Bowie died at age 54 after serving as mayor for four years.Sarah Worth Bowman continued to live in San Antonio until her death in 1903. She is buried at Springwood Cemetery there with her husband and two children: James A., born December 12th, 1882; and Sarah H., born February 2nd, 1885
