Rockwall was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1836 as a farming community on the east side of what is now Midland County. The name comes from nearby Rock Island Hill, which forms an important natural landmark in the area. The first post office was established in 1837 and continued to serve until 1840. In 1845, Rockwall became the seat of government for Midland County after it was organized from parts of Hardin and Travis Counties. The early years were difficult for Rockwall because its location made transportation difficult and access to water and markets limited the town's opportunities for growth. However, with hard work and dedication by its citizens, Rockwall began to prosper in the late 1800s thanks to its unique agricultural history and strategic location within easy reach of major centers such as Houston and San Antonio. In 1909, a group of civic leaders gathered around Mayor John Haggerty to discuss plans for developing new land within what is now Midland County that could be used for agriculture or other purposes if necessary; this led to the founding of what would eventually become Roundrock Ranch State Park; however, it wasn't until 1961 that mainstream development began through purchasing land east of Roundrock Ranch from several ranchers who had been using it as their ranching headquarters since before that date. Today, Rocks Wall remains one of America's most rural towns with just over 2 residents per square mile (0.8 adults per inhabitant).
