Rockwall is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rockwall was founded by Texans who came from North Carolina in 1836 to establish a trading post on the Red River. In 1840, the post was moved to what is now Rockwall and named for Fort Worth General James Fenton (1785-1860). The first residents were men who had come west to find new land and make money as traders. They built log cabins and hunted game while their families raised crops, raising hogs and chickens on their own acreage. In 1848, Hardin County was created from parts of Hudspeth and Travis Counties; it included most of what is now Rockwall except for a small piece that became neighboring Bothell later that year. In 1851, Hardin County renamed itself for General Sam Houston (1759-1845), who had led an unsuccessful attack against Mexico during the Mexican–American War.* The name Rockwall may have been inspired by another Texas fortification called "Forts Donelson" near present day Huntsville which served as headquarters for General Sam Houston's army in this time period. Donelson was erected in 1837 by Colonel James Bowie after his victory over Mexican forces at Buena Vista Creek Bridge near San Antonio.* After years of being used as a trading post and army staging area, Fort Worth arrived in Rockwall in 1881 when it merged with Ft Worth City Council seat #2 located between Doña Ana Street and Main Street*The original Post Office building still stands today just east of US 281/IH 35 across from Hwy 290 exit 134A off IH 35 just north of FM 935./ Just south of US 281/IH 35 on FM 935 there is also an old restaurant building known as the "Old Courts House". This building housed the jail until 1984 when it closed due to arson*In 1907 Fort Worth annexed much of Hudspeth County becoming one municipality; however Rockwall retained its own government until 1935 when it joined with other portions of Hudspeth County to form Austin *Fort Worth city Limits extended eastward past IH 35 into Austin beginning in 1959 so by 1970 annexation into Austin had occurred *Since then Rocky wall has continued to exist withinAustin but has no city limits

In the early 20th century, Rockwall became a center for cattle production and also served as a business hub for surrounding counties. Today, Rockwall is an historic community with a rich history that can be found primarily in its downtown area. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Rockwall County were German immigrants who arrived overland from Germany in 1837. They initially built homes near present-day Waco and began operations as farmers. By 1840, however, some of these Germans had moved westward into what is now Rockwall County. The first resident of what is now Rockwall was Johann Gottlieb Pflueger, who settled near present day Rocksprings on November 3, 1841. He named his new village after his home country of Bavaria. In 1843, John Denton purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land at the confluence of the Arkansas and Red Rivers from David Wells Cooley for $1 per acre ($120 total). This property would later become known as "Cowtown" because it housed many cowboys during the days when ranching was the predominant form of farming in this part of Texas. Denton developed this land into one of the most successful cattle ranches inTexas during this time period. By 1863, Denton's ranch had acquired another 2 miles (3 kilometers) eastward along Red River until it reached today's State Highway 183 Business Loop which runs parallel to US 183 northbound between Beaumont and Port Arthur; it then continued northeastward until it intersected FM 1960 southbound just east of Carlsbad Caverns National Park; then it turned south again until it crossed US 183 northwest thereof at Buffalo Gap; thence continuing southwestward until it terminated at FM 620 southeast of Lubbock; within minutes after coming across FM 620 he realized that he would have to abandon his original plan for Cowtown because there wasn't enough water available there even though he had leased 300 acres (121 hectares) adjacent to Buffalo Gap from James Hogg Forney.* *Forney would later develop Fort Worth into one of America's largest cities
