Rockwall is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Red River of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 43,814. The city was founded as Rockwall and Fort Worth in 1881 by refugees from Oak Cliff, a Dallas suburb. In 1911, it became part of Fort Worth before becoming its own municipality in 1920. It was annexed to Austin in 1971 and again to Rockwall in 1997. The population growth has been primarily due to annexations by other municipalities since then: the latest annexation happening on July 1st, 2017 when Midland became an official municipality within the boundaries of Rockwall.[1] The early history of rock wall can be traced back to 1881 when refugees from Oak Cliff settled near what is now Rockwall after fleeing their home country during the American Civil War (1861-1865). A small outpost called Fort Worth was established here soon afterward androck wall was officially formed as a result on November 20th 1881 under command of Colonel John Smeaton with assistance from Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Beaumont Webb[2]. The first white settlement in the area was made on the banks of the Sabine River by Captain James Bowie in 1836. After years of land acquisition and exploration, members of the Kenedy family founded what is now Rockwall County in 1881. The county seat was moved to present-day San Angelo in 1907.
