Rockwall is located in the southern portion of Tarrant County, Texas. As a small town founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1836, Rockwall has been through many Changes over the years. The original name was simply "Rockwall." In 1907, the name was changed to "Rockville" after Ridgefield, New York, which at that time was one of the most important towns in Texas. In 1950, when Rockwall became a city and its original boundaries were expanded to include portions of Fort Worth and Arlington Heights, the name again reverted to Rockwall. The current spelling comes about forty years later when officials decided that it would be more accurate to spell all words with an initial letter instead of using last letters for first letters like "a," "h," and "y." The change happened because rock means stone in Irish and wall refers both to a physical fortification (rock) as well as an ideological fence or barricade against invaders (the word also refers to a defensive barrier). The earliest residents of what is now Rockwall arrived from Scotland around 1836. They came on horseback carrying supplies necessary for their new land including timber and coal. By 1840 they had built a mill which functioned until 1845 when floods destroyed it. A group of Scots-Irish men who had emigrated from Ulster in Ireland tried unsuccessfully to build another mill near present day Rocksprings but this too failed due to rain water loss immediately following construction efforts. Over time other small businesses began popping up here such as wagon makers (cattle drivers brought their animals downriver for sale), blacksmiths (makers of horseshoes, belts, cannons shells etc.), dairymaids/housekeepers (provided milk for local residents),Bootleggers who took advantage of local riverside markets for alcohol shipments and others involved in various aspects of early Tarrant County life including agriculture or trade.. In 1848 two brothers named Johnnie MacInnes set out from Edinburgh Scotland on horseback looking for new land eastof the Canadian River. After traveling through much territory they reached what is now Tarrant County on November 6th1848 while passing through Bowie Creek junction just northwest of present day Rockspring Springs creek - their first stop on their journey across North America! They named their possessions around this area Rocky Ford or Ford's Ford because they were told by some people back home that there was a large rock nearby which resembled aFord carriages & horses could be seen if you looked close enough! Eventually they located what is now known as Rancho Grande eastof modern day Manor Road south Of FM 517 just west Of Gass Rd., This property ran along Preston Road extending into today's ROCKWALL city limits where remote access still exists today! From here Johnnie started farming & ranching his land primarily raising cattle but eventually Import duties made it difficult (& costly) to sell any beef so he turned his attention towards wine making starting with winemaking cellars within his rancho Grande vineyard . He continued making Wine until 1870 when he sold all his Vineyards except one situated northeastofpresentday Ballpark Rd., That Cellar remains Operated Today by descendants OF THAT FAMILY NAME AS DOES A WINERY LOCATED JUST SOUTH OF ROCKWALL ON ROAD TO FOSTER DOWNTOWN . By 1860 there were approximately 150 residents living within present day Rockwall limits although trading post activity continued well into the 20th century The first municipal election held in Rockwall occurred on April 3rd1861 despite attempts by deputies from Fort Worth Constable Division headed by Lieutenant Colonel George Cushing not being able to attend due personal business elsewhere.. Only three citizens qualified under Cannon’s law (( i ‘e James Naylor Gobles Sr., Wm Honeycutt jr., Chas Weller ))to participate rendering them ineligible under Potter’s law (( i ‘e Sam Houston)) resulting in Mayor Ritchie having sole power over City Affairs & Police Department... On December 2nd 1861 Mayor Ritchie submitted $1 000 worth o silverware manufactured at Bowie Creek Foundry next door To His Mansion To fund Town Hall building project… After months delay resulted from weather conditions Mayor Ritchie finally received funding enabling him To begin work On The Building beginning February 8th 1862 after spending weeks carefully packing materials ashore At Brazoria Bayou… Completed On March 14th 1863 It Was Submitted For Approval To Build& occupancy commenced January 1st 1863…. Today’s Municipal Building stands proud occupant Of Many YearsBuilt By Men Who Knew What Hard Work Etiquette Required
