In 2000Texaco merged with American Petroleum Institute to form ExxonMobil Corp., but Huggett Oil & Gas Co., which owned Texaco land adjacent to Hillsdale Station (the site now occupied by Wal-Mart), continued using the name "Hillsdale Petroleum" until 2006 when it changed its name back to Texaco Inc.. Consequently, when American pioneers arrived in 1881 they found an empty land waiting for them with few resources to offer. Nonetheless, some brave pioneer men decided to try and start a new life in what would eventually become Rockwall by purchasing property from locally elected officials. In February 1882 one such man was J H Smith who purchased 640 acres north east of present day Rockwall from Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at an auction held at Hardin's Creek Ranch Headquarters near Nacogdoches. This initial purchase set off a chain reaction that led to other pioneers coming overland from Midland County eager to claim parcels of land that could be developed into farms or ranching operations. In 1865 General Sam Houston had successfully defended San Jacinto against Mexican forces during the Battle of San Jacinto and as a result many Texans felt like they owed their state’s victory to him and his troops rather than Mexico which embarrassed both Houston’s political enemies in Congress as well as President Buchanan’s administration who desired war with Mexico To these people Texan independence seemed more likely then anything else so soon after the end of slavery thanks largely to General Houston’s leadership After annexing New Mexico it became obvious that we wouldn't have any problems fighting another country on our own soil so I thought it might be fun just throw open our borders not caring about ANYONE ELSE So I did In 1880 James H Smith purchased 640 acres north eastof present dayRock wall from Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at an auction held at Hardin's Creek Ranch headquarters near Nacogdoches .
