Rockwall is a small town in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Rockwall was James Robertson in 1836. He built a cabin on an old rancho near present-day Lamar Boulevard and McCullough Road. In 1839, Robertson's son John founded the community of Mission Viejo just outside of Rockwall on land that he had purchased from Juan Bautista de Cuellar y Uribe. The mission was abandoned after only two years due to lack of funds and competition from more developed areas within San Antonio County. In 1840, Hugo Chavez y Costilla organized a group of around 25 farmers to purchase 335 acres (150 ha) east of modern-day Rockwall from José Joaquín Alvarado for $240 cash and 10 cattle. They named their new community they were located "Chavezville" after Hugo Chavez y Costilla himself (1814-1879). The first post office opened in Chavezville on March 15, 1841 under the name "Alamo". In 1850, Colonel James Lincoln Hogg moved his family to what would become Rockwall from Carthage, Tennessee with his wife Eliza Hogg Waddell and four children: Olivia Hogg Waddell (1851-1937), Quincey Hogg Waddell (1854-1927), Virgil Atherton Hogg (1856-1925) and Harlan Arrington Hogg (1858-1920). He had been appointed colonel commanding the 1st Cavalry Regiment during the Mexican War which left him with an interest in developing this area as well as having grazing land available for horses and cows. He laid out a small town which included several homes near today's Elmendorf Road/Upper Loop Rd., Bush Lane/New Hope Road and present day McCullough Road/Lamar Boulevard south of Old Spanish Trail just west of present day Lamar Boulevard between Bush Lane/New Hope Road and Upper Loop Rd./Lamar Boulevard where he built his home known as "Hogtown". On December 9th 1861 Colonel James Lincoln Hogg married Anna Kelleher at Presbyterian church in Hogtown following her conversion to Christianity through baptism by Bishop David Dixon [1]. She was born October 17th 1852 at Springdale Baptist Church in Carthage TN to parents General Arthur Kelleher Sr./nee Anna Kelleher d’Amboise(1785 - 1865)/Daniel Boone(1765 - 1835) & Rachel Clarkson(1788 – 1889)]. Her paternal grandparents were General Andrew Clark /nee Eleanor Grigsby Clark(1800 – 1766)/George Washington Custis III(1767 – 1800)/Eleanor Randolph Custis(1768 – 1800)[2], Maria Clara Elizabeth Bonham Scott/(November 16th 1787 – February 20th 1848)[3] & Joe Bonham[4]. Her maternal grandparents were Judge Francis Webb Moultrie /nee Sarah Snively Webb Moultrie/(April 13th 1800 - November 11th 1830)[5], Anne Tryon Carrall Webb (/nee Bartholomew Tryon Carrall)(March 14th 1794 - August 21st 1865)[6], Martha Hemings Crawford [(December 12th 1796 - January 6th 1870)] & Richard Henry Lee.(January 7th 1800 - April 4teenth 1862)]. Her greatgrandparents were Captain Nicholas Carrall [(December 12Th 1700 - September 26 Th 1792)]. On July 3rd 1861 Anna Pamelia Hardenburgh married Samuel Hardenburgh at Presbyterian church also located in Hogtown following her conversion to Christianity through baptism by Bishop David Dixon [7]. Anna Pamelia Hardenburgh was born October 8 th 1860 at Dayton OH to parents Caleb Hardenburroughs ((October 8 th 1860 December 2 nd 1840)-July 3 rd 1861)) & Lucy Ann Maynard((March 30 th 1847 November 25 th 1863)). Samuel Hardenburgh died January 24 th 1862 age 49 years old while living at Mount Pleasant KY with his wife Annie Maynard.[8] There are three very interesting connections between ROKWALL AND THE AMERICAN FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM: 1) There are numerous Revolutionary War veterans buried here including LtCol Robert Ewell Hancock who fought alongside General Sam Houston; 2)rock wall native Jesse Owens became world champion sprinting athlete; 3) many notable people associated with Texas Instruments headquartered nearby such as Dr.-Edwin Littman
Rockwall was founded in 1848 as a ranching community. The first post office in the community was established in 1850. In 1865, the United States Congress created a new county, Medina County, within Texas, and Rockwall became part of that county. In 1876, Rockwall Academy was founded and is still in operation today. In 1954, the Interstate 35W freeway was built through the community androckwall lost its status as a farming town.Today, Rockwall is home to several businesses and homes as well as some interesting historical items including an old stone wall that has been preserved for preservation
