In 1865, the Texas Rangers were founded to resist Mexican immigration. The Rangers began patrolling the borderlands and raiding Mexican settlements in 1866. One of the first cases involving a Ranger was when Johnnie Cochran was killed by a bandit in Robstown. This event made law enforcement officials more aggressive on the border and gave rise to the term "The Texas Rangers." One of the most famous Ranger Cases was that of Johnnie Cochran. In this case, Cochran was accused of stealing property from an Indian tribe and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. After his release, he won an appeal and received a pardon from President Ulysses S. Grant. This event helped solidify law enforcement's role on the border as well as make Robstown one of its most important towns. Robstown is a small town in Cooke County, Texas, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. The community developed around the railroad depot on its east side. In 1865, the Texas and Pacific Railway built a line from Lubbock to Robstown. Railroad companies continued to build lines into Robstown through the late 1800s, until most of the town was destroyed in a fire in 1907. A new district was created in 1909 and development continued until 1963 when much of the area was annexed by Dallas. The current community began as an agricultural community near the original depot on East Second Street. The first post office opened in 1879, and most of what is now Robstown developed between that date and 1915 when a bridge over Marsh Creek connected downtown with farms to the north and west. When rail service ended in 1957, many farmers discontinued their operations and some moved away; however, most kept their homes or bought them back after reconstruction began on the east side of town following World War II. The first businesses opened along East Second Street during this time: a general store operated from 1879-1903; two schools were established 1908-10; there were also several churches (First Baptist then Methodist) before 1920; two hotels were built 1912-13: one became known as "The Park Hotel" which remain extant as part of UTC's campus today; a grocery store followed 1913-16; finally, it was announced by Mayor John Pogue about 1916 that "a post office will be erected for Robstown".[1] Most of what is now downtown Robstown developed between 1915 and 1925 when Marshall Boulevard was constructed bypassing downtown limits to become concurrent with I-35W/I-635W (the present highway). At this time downtown boundaries changed slightly with Dealey Plaza being located just south of Marshall Boulevard while Third Street extended eastward beyond Interstate Highway 35W/I-635W to meet First Avenue again soon after (/ currently still does). This interchange would come to be known locally as "The Big One". In 1951 Mapleton Realty Company leased space on East Second Street from Joplin Electric Cooperative for retail use (later becoming stadium plaza) prior to opening its own building across Main Street which remains extant today - Mapleton's early business activity had significant impact on later development patterns within Downtown Robstown including establishment of UTC's predecessor UTEP university adjacent thereto beginning circa 1933 – all without ever having crossing Main Street![2][3][4] In 1954 Robert Wagoner purchased land adjoining US 281 / IH 35E forming Depot Square – home base for local civic organizations & events up thru at least 1978 prior exclusively thereto & continuing thru 2017 parkland acquisition therein w/ subsequent renovation completed concurrently herein see attached map showing changes therein sinceergus' purchase—this square (& surrounding neighborhoods) has been continuously occupied by humans w/ various uses throughout existence od [now 2018?] Bridges over Marsh Creek have served both transportation needs & residential purposes throughout history: grade crossing photos below show creek crossings prior variously owned property boundaries
The first European to visit Robstown was a French trader named Jean Lafitte in 1836. The town was founded on the banks of the Colorado River, and soon became a hub for trade with the nearby Mexican and Apache settlements. In 1848, Robstown hosted the Texas–New Mexico border treaty signing which ended legal disputes between New Mexico and Texas. In 1865, General John Fetterman established Fort Worth as the new capital of Texas after Austin's removal from office as its governor. The fort served as a military garrison until it was abandoned in 1868. In 1870, Robstown became an independent municipality when it seceded from Travis County. The town experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction following the Civil War, eventually reaching a peak population of around 100 residents in 1920. However, economic recession and World War II led to significant decreases in population over the next several decades. By 1970, only about 25 people lived in Robstown –the lowest population concentration ever recorded in this community before present day. Robstown has since experienced significant gentrification and revitalization efforts, experiencing an increase in population (now numbering more than 200) since 2000 primarily due to expanding job opportunities within local businesses and development projects such as mixed-use developments along Interstate 10 freeway corridors adjacent to downtown Robstown.
