Davis was a successful entrepreneur and cattleman who also became an early advocate for gun safety. He started saving histarget ammunition and selling it to other farmers and hunters. By 1892, Davis had built a large target range that included three ranges, sixty-six guns, and twenty-four rifles. The range was also home to one of America's earliest schoolboy rifle tournaments where competitors from all over competed for prizes including shotguns, pistols, rifles, and horses. In 1916, Davis sold hisTarget business to Henny Kapp who renamed it Kapp's Gun Range. The range continued to be operational until 1997 when it was closed due to financial difficulties. Today there is only an historical plaque at the site commemorating John S.'S contributions to local gun culture in Robstown.
