Robstown is a small town in the Midland region of Texas, located about 20 miles south of Austin and 25 miles east of Dallas. The population was 1,854 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Johnson County seat. The first people to live in Robstown were farmers who came over from Mexico in the 1820s. They built their homes on high ground near the creek that now becomes Main Street. In 1828, John Bigham (1805-1890), an Anglo-Irishman, founded a grocery store and post office in what is now downtown Robstown. The first school was opened in 1829 by Mrs. Elizabeth Aiken (1810-1900). By 1850, there were three churches in Robstown: one Congregational, one Methodist, and one Baptist. In 1870, Wm Denton (died 1865)established a flour mill and also started a blacksmith shop and wagon wheelwright business adjacent to his residence on Third Street. The town's first hotel was built by Jno Pritchard (1800-1868) on Elmira Drive in 1876 while he was pastor at Second Baptist Church; it later became known as the Robinson Hotel. The town had its peak population around 1920 with some 870 residents; however it decreased rapidly after World War II due to migration to other areas of Texas or out of country altogether. In 1950, only 94 residents remained when annexation by Johnson County occurred; this number grew slightly until 1960 when all but two buildings within downtown Robstown were destroyed by fire during a storm event which also destroyed much property elsewhere in town including several stores and residences dating back to the 1800s!
Robstown was founded in 1875 by cattle ranchers and cowboys. It became a small town after the construction of the Chicago, Texas & Mexico Railway in 1893. The railroad helped spur population growth in Robstown and other towns along its route. In 1907, Robstown became the site of the first public school in Texas.
