In 1898, the first revolver was produced in Robstown. It was a simple affair, just a wooden frame with percussion cap gunpowder firing it. In 1907, the town received its own armory and began manufacturing rifles and pistols. Ammunition production continued until 1942 when all guns were transitioned to ammunition-free use. In 1954, the town experienced its first homicide when an old man died from gunshot wounds he sustained while hunting deer in his property. The following year saw a major change when Firearms Ordinance No. 5 was passed which required residents to get government-issued identification before owning any firearms or ammunition. This ordinance became effective on July 1, 1957 and has been in effect ever since. It is now illegal for anyone under 21 years old to possess a handgun without having government-issued identification or having undergone a background check/gun safety training program like those mandated for all other retailers of firearms within Texas’s borders (see Texarkana County Gun Laws). Additionally, it is unlawful for anyone who does not have government-issued identification or have undergone a background check/gun safety training program to sell any firearm or ammo within Texas’ borders without prior written consent from their Retailer Operator–a business entity that provides licensed retail services through licensees).

The city has experienced rapid growth since becoming an independent municipality; in 2000 it had a population of over 50 000 residents and now ranks as one of Texarkana's fastest growing cities.
