It is part of the Amarillo-Texarkana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Robstown was Simeon Butler, who arrived in 1836. The community was named for General Sam Houston (1792-1836), who fought against Mexico during the Mexican–American War. The town's original site was on a hill near what is now Interstate 30 and Vance Street. In 1879, local landowner John Hays donated 640 acres (2 km²) of his land to the town for use as a public square and school district. A post office called Robstown was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1902, two brothers--Samuel Fenton and Julius Fenton--founded The Pecos Journal Printing Company to produce periodicals such as "The Republican" and "The Democratic Review". They published their newspapers from their home on Third Street until 1910 when they moved to 14th Street north of downtown Robstown. In 1912, an election resulted in the appointment of Mayor JB White as the first African American mayor of Texas City (later Dallas). Other mayors during that time include WF Willis (1914-1920), AJ Dixon (1922-1924), WW Harwood (1927-1929), JM Ladd(1930-1932), SM Weinberger( 1933-) and AD Ritchie (1945-.). In 1935, white voters reelected Mayor White with only one percent less than he received at the polls four years earlier; however he resigned due to health reasons after serving just over four years term}. After his resignation white voters granted African American citizens voting rights effective January 1st 1946; James Meeks served as mayor from that date through 1977 inclusive[1]. Walter Evers became mayor uponFW Danforth's death on November 3rd 1978[2].
