Many pioneer families built homes outbuildings such as barns or outhouses on their farms which they used for storage and living quarters during winter months when access to proper roads was not available or difficult to find. In some cases these buildings still stand today testifying to how settlers thought about their new surroundings: many constructed simple log cabins with thatched roofs directly atop large boulders so that weatherization could take place without affecting roofing Buckley soon afterwards “a small town sprang up around adobeen [sic]blocks” Craig . . . One account reports: “In less than a year after his arrival he had erected a frame house on a knoll overlooking Jacksonport Bayou opposite present day downtown Dallas” The first post office opened at Weatherford on December 12th 1879 under the name Weatherford Heights Station; it continued operations until it was discontinued on February 3rd 1902 due to population growth within Texas Ranger District No 4 (later renamed the Dallas Ranger District). During this time only stagecoach service between Austin and Fort Worth operated through nearby Monahans Creek Bridge making mail delivery necessary for merchants wishing to ship goods across this important artery during those tough times As Texans began moving into Oklahoma Territory during the early 1900s most residents vacated what remained of central Texas for new settlements closer to frontier resources such as petroleum deposits along US-Mexico borders northward into Canadian territory accessible only via open plains crossings called "the Gadsden Purchase." By 1910 an estimated 20%of all school children lived outside county lines while more than 90%of adult males worked outside agriculture
