Robinson, Texas is a small town in Lubbock County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Chambers–Edwards Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as two families who pooled their resources to buy a piece of land for a farm. They named their farm Robinson after one of their sons (the other being Tom), and continued to farm there until 1898 when they sold the land to J.W. Robinson Sr., an oil millionaire from Oklahoma City. In 1949, J.W.'s son John W."J" Robinson became the first black person to be elected Mayor of Lubbock with over 60% of the vote and served for two terms (1949-1957). In 1962, African Americans formed a self-help group called "The Citizens' Council" which advocated for civil rights and voted to integrate Lubbock high school; this event also led to the name change from Robinson High School to Wiley Central High School in 1967. Robinson was incorporated as an unincorporated community on November 1, 1907 by citizens meeting in the barn used by farmers James Aiken and Clements Hammond on horseback. The town had no post office until 1915 when it opened up under mail order from Wichita Falls, TX which at that time had more residents than Lubbock county! The first store was built soon afterwards by Mrs Higginson who traded goods with her neighbors across the road from her home on State Road 7th Street near present day Interstate 30/Upper George Bridge Drive - she operated what is still consideredLubbock's only grocery store! In 1917 Mrs Higginson's daughter Della married Sam Reeves and moved into what is now known as Mrs Reeves House where she ran a hotel until her death in 1960 leaving behind 10 children plus 5 grandchildren! Todayvirtually all activity within walking or biking distance takes place through either Mrs Reeves House Museum open daily 9am-4pm or Crossroads Village Shopping Center just east of I-30Exit 281A off I-30E @ US 287 exit
