Robinson, Texas was the birthplace of the first practical optical instrument, a microscope. The instrument was made by Dr. Samuel Morse and Edward Robinson in 1827. It is still in use today to study the universe.
Robinson is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Robinson is located on FM 620 and U.S. Route 287. It is part of the Richardson–Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as an agricultural community that grew up around the Robinson Grist Mill and sawmill operations which were closed in the late 1800s due to competition from larger mills in nearby Fort Worth. The mill site was used for housing until 1955 when it was sold to the city of Richardson for use as a parkland area. In 1969, Richardson designated Robinson Park as a national historic district because of its significance in the American Civil War and Reconstruction eras. The townsite that now occupies Robinson was first settled by Texans who came to Tarrant County after 1836 during Mexican-American War efforts to land grants along what is now I-10th Street east of present day TX 77th Avenue (now US 290). A post office called "Robinson" was established in 1837, and remained active until 1896. At some point between 1837 and 1895, settlers took up residence near what is now FM 620; this stretch of road became known locally as "the Prairie." In 1865, John Hargrave purchased 6 hectares (15 acres) southeast of present day FM 620 from George Waddell for $1 per acre; this property became known as Hargrave's Grove after Hargrave's grandson bought it back from Waddell in 1886 for $5 per acre ($100 total). One year later, Hargrive donated 3 more hectares (8 acres) towards building a Methodist Episcopal church on this property; work commenced on the structure which opened its doors on December 14, 1887 under the leadership of Reverend William Stephenson Sr.. The current frame Methodist Church building stands today on Newton Road adjacent to Hargrave Elementary School across from United States Post Office (current location map). As development increased along Brushy Creek northward into what are now Robinson's eastern boundaries during early 20th century, citizens banded together to purchase or lease additional tracts of land – some overlapping those remaining today – establishing farms, ranches and other commercial enterprises within their respective communities while also maintaining strong cultural ties with their ancestral homelands in Mexico and Texas respectively (Travis Country Museum Association website accessed Feb 2019). These expanding businesses generally prospered despite occasional flooding or droughts caused by periodic rainswater collector systems situated upstream along Brushy Creek – notable events that impacted township residents directly included 1918 floods which destroyed crops grown west of Hutchinson Drive; 1945 fire that destroyed most homes east off US 290; 1966 tornado that did significant damage west off US 290 just south of present day FM 620); 1971 oil spillage resultant flooding near Hutchinson Drive Bridge over Brushy Creek - many people lost their homesCleveland Heights Historical Society website accessed Feb 2019). Robinson was founded in 1847 by James W. Robinson, a postmaster and landowner who had bought 2,000 acres of land in the area from Tom Hinton. The town was named for Robinson, who donated the land to the town. The first store opened in 1849. The town grew rapidly and by 1865 it had a population of about 350 people. By 1870, Robinson had a school, three churches, a sawmill, an opera house, and two stores. In 1876, the Texas Railroad Company built a rail line through Robinson and this increased its importance as a trade center. In 1896, Robinson became part of Fort Worth County and in 1912 it became part of Dallas County. Today, there are only small traces of what once was Robinson: one street is still called "Robinson Avenue," while another is known as "Hinton Boulevard."
