Robinson is named after General Robert E. Lee and was platted in 1872 by J.P. Morgan and other railroad executives as a stop on their extended trip through the region. The original post office was established at Robinson in 1875, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. In 1903, a new schoolhouse was erected north of the old store to serve the growing community. That building still stands today as an important local landmark and has been used for various functions including dances, auctions, amateur theatrical performances, political rallies and more over the years. In 1905-1906 when oil became available near Rockport east of town (the first commercial production of its kind), prospectors from nearby Cuttersville began to come to Robinson for fuel because no one else could get it here from nearby Refugio Blanco where supplies were drawn from upstream along Trinity River valley reservoirs owned by East Texan Oil Company Ltd.. By 1912 there were several businesses functioning within Robbie's limits: three stores - Richardson Bros., Gartner & Hancock ; two blacksmiths - Amos Gibbs & Harry Griggs ; four dairy farmers - Mrs Oscar Barnett ; five weavers - Mrs Nellie Baird ; six men employed at home among others Starting about 1916 or 1917 there appeared on Main Street some sort of "ware house" or "cabins" used by local miners which served as improvised homes during tough times when there wasn't much else for them to do but hunker down inside while their families went off to dig coal seams or worse outside under difficult conditions . As refinery operations increased throughout World War I – both above ground at Rockport before trucks got into town carrying drums of gasoil litters – so too did demand for goods manufactured here such as automobiles, feedstock for steel mills etc.; accordingly additional businesses proliferated such as African Methodist Episcopal Church (later First Baptist Church) founded 1911 opposite Richardsons hardware store which served both locals and visiting miners until Prohibition closed that church down in 1930 . In 1922 oil prices collapsed following world war II shortages caused by global economic depression combined with US entry into World War II providing weapons unavailable anywhere else especially given Roosevelt’s callousness regarding Pearl Harbor Japan ‘s attack’ although many Texans felt personally outraged over Japanese internment camps set up right here !!
