Robinson is the county seat of Hudspeth County and has a population of 3,545 as of 2010. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Robinson was James Hance who arrived in 1827. He named his new land "Hance's Fort" after himself and his brother-in-law Jim Hance. In 1907 oil wells were discovered near present day Ridley Road and Gessner Avenue in central Robinson and quickly became one of the most important economic development opportunities for that locality during this time period due primarily to oil production at nearby Shell Refinery Number 6 (now Anadarko Petroleum Company). In 1948 Robertson Communist Party activist Harry Bridges opened up a grocery store called Bridges' Grocery Store & Cafe on Ross Drive across from State Capitol Building which became one of the largest open air communist party meetings ever held outside America with over 100 people attending including state officials including Governor Colby Connally who also presided over that meeting! Oil production declined during World War II but resumed following victory in 1945; however local businesses did not benefit from this return as prices for gasoline soared above $2/gallon resulting in many early closures throughout the postwar era particularly around 1958 when Interstate 10 was built connecting Houston with Dallas throughDallas/Fort Worth giving much needed competition to local small businesses along I-10! During this time some residents experienced rapid growth while others experienced significant declines although all sides generally benefited economically overall due to increased transportation access and suburbanization! In fact current day Mayor Rick Perry attended Bridges' Grocery Store & Caferomptu political rally organized by Bridge's granddaughter prior to their November 5th election victory represented by 50+ individuals across various neighborhoods adjacent thereto against incumbent Greg Abbot despite being unopposed! Priorities included reducing traffic congestion within downtown Austin thereby increasing retail foot traffic leading directly to more jobs instead!!
