The guns used a tubular magazine with a series of chambers that held rounds to be fired by turning a crank. These early airguns were very inaccurate and required practice to build up speed and aim. In 1907, Gottlieb & Co., manufacturers of the world’s first practical automatic pistols, introduced their own version of an airgun called the Model 1903 rifle pistol. The Gottlieb gun featured a rotating barrel that could fire multiple rounds at once as well as a stock that allowed the user to control the muzzleloader’s accuracy while firing. This new type of airgun was incredibly effective and quickly became popular throughout World War I due to its ability to accurate shoot groups at distances up to 100 yards! Later in World War I, Germany began producing their own versions of automatic rifles known as MG 08/15 (or MP-14) models. These weapons became extremely popular due to their high rate of fire and excellent accuracy both at close range and long range. The MG 08/15 was also able to fire subsonic ammunition which made it ideal for use in precision bombing raids! During World War II, many different types of firearms were developed including cannons, machineguns, rockets, aircraft engines etcetera but ultimately the best weapon system during war was definitely an artillery shell!
