Rio Grande City experienced rapid growth following World War II when businesses were created to support military spending in south Texas. Afterward, however, economic development slowed as new jobs were available only in neighboringHouston or Dallas. In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in downtown Rio Grande City as a destination for nightlife and cultural events; this has helped to revive activity along Main Street and elsewhere in town.

Rio Grande City is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth-Arlington-Dallas metropolitan area. The Rio Grande City community began as a Mormon settlement in 1836 on the lower Trinity River near present-day Red Oak Road and San Antonio Road. The first post office was established in 1840, and by 1865 it had become the largest town in Tarrant County with a population of 1,600. The community changed its name to Rio Grande City on December 12, 1892 following an act of Congress which designated the entire region that included Tarrant County as part of Mexico for all purposes. The construction of the railroad through Tarrant County created new opportunities for Rio Grande City businesses and residents. In 1907, Rio Grande City became one of the original 10 incorporated cities in Texas. Businesses grew quickly due to increased trade with Mexico and other parts of South America during World War I and World War II; prior to 1940 only farmers operated factories in downtown Rio Grande City. In 1941, when MacArthur's Japan attacked Pearl Harbor (the date is November 8th), many people living within striking distance of Tokyo were fearful for their safety given Japan's ruthless exploitation of Asia Minor during World War II; nonetheless many people chose not to evacuate because they believed they would eventually be safe back home once hostilities stopped. Many Japanese Americans also chose not to leave because they did not believe their loyalty would be questioned after so long being under Japanese rule; some have even claimed that they received preferential treatment from American authorities while Japanese citizens faced discrimination both before and after Pearl Harbor based on race or national origin (although no such documentation exists). In 1945 General Douglas MacArthur issued orders ordering all U.S.-owned property throughout Asia Minor—save Hiroshima—to be seized by Allied forces as part-of Operation Crossroads; this caused significant hysteria among civilians living within striking distance of Tokyo who were unsure what would happen next should Japan resume hostilities against itself without Allies support or authorization from Washington - some still remain unaware over 60 years later about what actually happened (see: "Hiroshima: 50 Years Later"). Consequently around 3% (or approximately 100 families) out of a total city population density (~10,000) remained unaccounted for until 1974 when various government documents were declassified and released revealing that most everyone who remained unaccounted either left voluntarily during or immediately following liberation or was forcibly evacuated during Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' ("MHI") takeover/occupation/destruction campaign known asOperation Yellow Peril which lasted from September 1945 until May 1946). Today there are more than 3000 descendants living within downtown RIGA today making it one proud cultural enclave surrounded by vibrant Mexican communities &Texan border towns
