The name "Rio Grande City" was given to it by General Antonio López de Santa Anna as a way of distinguishing it from other cities in what had been Spanish territory. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Rio Grande City were traders and missionaries who founded missions such as San José de la Frontera (1736), San Felipe (1749), and Santa Clara (1802). In 1836, Mexico gained independence from Spain, and Rio Grande City became part of Mexican territory. When Mexican troops marched into Texcoco during the Mexican–American War, they destroyed much of what remains of Anglo civilization there; however, some English-speaking Texans took up arms against Mexico and guerrilla warfare continued until 1865 when peace was signed between USA and Mexico. After that war ended most Anglo residents fled to other parts of Texas or left for good. In 1907 businessman J. W. Marriott purchased land east of town on Cedar Hill Road for $1 million: he built one of the first commercial buildings in downtown Rio Grande City – today's Marriott Hotel – which still stands today. He also built several homes onsite including Rancho Guadalupe Mansion which is now used as a museum open to the public

The first European settlement in what is now Rio Grande City was made by José de la Garza and Alejandro Buenaventura on December 8, 1836, when they organized an expedition to explore what became present-day Texas. They named their new community Esperanza after the Spanish princess Isabela Eugenia of Spain who had been married to General Antonio López de Santa Anna during Mexican independence War (1846-48). The city's first store opened on December 9th, 1851. In 1857, construction began on a railroad link between Dallas and Houston which would eventually become known as the Texan Trail. This railroad helped spur development around Rio Grande City including numerous mills and businesses that thrived until World War II when war production shifted away from agriculture to munitions factories and other manufacturing centers across North America. During much of its history, Rio Grande City faced economic decline due to several factors such as desertification of its surrounding areas following widespread irrigation projects initiated duringthe 1920s; Mexican immigration intoimony towards a booming Hispanic community; waves of natural disasters such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma hitting the area in 2017;and fluctuations in oil prices which caused many small businesses owners to go bankrupt within months or years of being established
In 1847, the Rio Grande City was founded as a trading post on the banks of the river. The city grew rapidly and by 1874 it had over 12,000 residents. In 1907, Rio Grande City became an incorporated town. In 1932, the city merged with McAllen, Texas to form McAllen-Rio Grande City County.
