Rio Grande City, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Hudspeth County. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 151,829. It is also the second most populous municipality in Hudspeth County after Fort Worth. The Rio Grande Valley has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 12,000 years and was first settled by Spanish colonists in 1540. The city was founded on April 15, 1872 as part of the November 26, 1872 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War. In 1916 Rio Grande City became an independent city following annexation by Fort Worth and it continued to be called Rio Grande City until July 1st, 1966 when it joined Fort Worth as its official name.[1] On December 4th 1960 a referendum passed to change its name back to Hudspeth County from Austin County (the previous county's name) due to objections from some residents who felt that their county should have been named after them rather than Austin (because they were more numerous).[2] Since then it has been known as "The Crossroads of Texas".[3][4][5] Since independence from Mexico in 1916 Rio Grande City has experienced many changes both positive and negative including annexations by other cities such as Dallas (1926), Houston (1927), San Antonio (1930), El Paso (1936), Lubbock (1938) and Amarillo (1964). Despite these changes much important cultural identity remains with what is now called "Rio Grande City" including its historic district which contains many large American graves dating back to before the war or during Reconstruction like those of General Sam Houston or Confederate general Robert E Lee[6]. One important aspect that has not changed however is the importance given to knives within this culture where knives are considered one's most personal belongings[7]. In 1869, Fort Worth and its surroundings were ceded to the United States by Mexico in what has been called “the first Mexican War”. At that time Rio Grande City was just a small Austin village with a population of 100 people.Mexican American settlers began arriving in large numbers starting in 1876 and soon there were over 1,000 residents living in Rio Grande City proper. The early years of the city were difficult as crop failures led to food shortages and social unrest which helped lead to annexation by Fort Worth in 1886. However, because of Rio Grande City’s location on the railroad corridor linking Dallas and Amarillo it quickly became one of the most important cities on this side of the border. In 1912 construction began on what would become known as Municipal Building No 5 which anchored downtown for over sixty years until it was destroyed by fire in 1966. The post-World War II boom brought new growth to town with thousands of immigrants coming from all around America looking for work opportunities during those hard times. By 1970 Rio Grande City had reached its peak with a population close to 2,000 people but that number decreased significantly during the late 1980s through early 1990s due largely to Hispanic gang violence which plagued much of western Texas at that time. However since 2000 things have started to turnaround with new investment being made in downtown infrastructure and job creation throughout the city center resulting in an overall surge in population from 8051 as reported at the 2010 census to 8897 as reported at July 2016 – making Rio Grande City one of fastest growing cities across Texoma!

The population was 27,028 at the 2010 census, making it the 9th-most populous city in Texas and the 5th-most populous municipality in Dallas County. The metropolitan area has a population of 1,550,000 as of 2015. Rio Grande City is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington Combined Statistical Area. The settlement of what is now Rio Grande City was called "New Braunfels" by George Bird Carleton after his crossing from Mexico into South Texas on April 12, 1846 during the Mexican-American War. A post office called New Braunfels was established in 1847, and became known as Rio Grande City on July 3, 1849 when Santa Fe Railroad officials moved their main depot here from San Antonio de Bexar (now Austin). By 1865, most of present day Dallas County had been annexed to Baylor College; however, portions were still included within Arlington County including Rio Grande City until February 17, 1896 when all Arlington County boundaries were reorganized to create Denton County with its current name. In 1912 it merged with nearby Fort Worth to form one large city under one mayor and one court system - becoming one of America's first planned cities; this resulted in significant job growth for both cities as businesses amalgamated and new businesses were formed out of old ones to keep up with growing demand for goods and services. In 1938 oil drilling began near downtown Rio Grande City which led to rapid growth in the downtown business district; however development stopped due to lack of affordable housing stock and other factors such as water shortages that followed World War II fuel production increases throughout much OFDOT land across TX but not downtown- resulting corpsedings/ gentrification which continues today although some original businesses have reopened or are being redeveloped such as Jamba Juice
Rio Grande City was founded in 1836 by José Antonio Mexía and his brothers. It became a capital of the Mexican Republic in 1848, and then an American colony in 1867. The city was named for the Rio Grande, which forms its border with Mexico.
