Rio Grande City, Texas is a city located in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 269 at the 2010 census. Rio Grande City is the county seat of Midland County. The city is also the location of Texarkana, which is the most populous municipality in Midland County and one of its six counties. Located on both sides of the Arkansas River and bisected by Interstate 35W, Rio Grande City has been an important center for commerce and immigration since it was founded by Texans in 1836 as Lubbock. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Grant called upon General John B. Magruder to lead his army into Nacogdoches County in order to cut off Confederate supply lines from their bases east of Dallas. Magruder decided not to move his army forward into Nacogdoches County because he knew that if he did so he would have to cross the Arkansas River and fight against Union forces on two different sides of the river - something that he could not afford to do. In 1927, when Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto arrived in what is now Midland County searching for a route northward through Central Texas to Denver via Brownsville and Mexico City, he found evidence that this route had been traveled by Native Americans long before Europeans arrived in 1519: He discovered a trading post near present-day Lubbock which had been used by Native Americans since at least 1493 A.D., well before any European settlement began in Central Texas or even across the Arkansas River! Mexican traders traveling downriver from Pecos Island established contact with these Plains Indians as early as 1694 A.D., thus revealing how our southern border had developed over more than 350 years! The town site chosen for Rio Grande City was donated by Commodore John Denton Goodloe (1801-1887) who served as Commandant of Customs for Galveston Bayou District during Reconstruction following America’s victory over Spain at Palo Alto on April 8th 1865; Goodloe believed that “the people hereabouts will soon be induced thereto by inducements offered them hereafter” (Moses Ransom). Denton named his new community after himself – Rio Bravo del Norte – “the watercourse from Brownsville” (Goudreau). On November 12th 1870 Congress amended Section 8(a)of Act No.: 68-938 giving Ector Township status within Brazoria Countyshipping area designated under Sections 5(c), 6(f), 7(b), 11(a)and 13 OFTAR entitled "Commerce Zone" having jurisdiction over all waters within 100 miles thereof inclusive including rivers & creeks subject thereto including Fannin & Eagle Canyons situated therein & all unincorporated territory lying within said Commerce Zone Described As follows: This zone embraces all land between Buffalo Bayou ana Houston Road situated east o'er Baylor Creek thence southwesterly along Buffalo Bayou To White Oak Lake thence easterly Along White Oak Lake To FM 2568 thence northerly along FM 2568 To Brazoria Creek thence westerly along Brazoria Creek Into Ector Township". The first white settler was James McCabe who came upriver from Lubbock on July 10th 1836 with his family.; At first they only built a little shack but soon started building larger homes using logs taken from nearby Mount Carmel mountain (). Rio Grande City, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas and is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The population was 109,711 as of the 2010 census. Rio Grande City was founded by Americans on September 15, 1836 as part of the Laredo Expedition under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The city has been named for two rivers: the Rio Grande and its tributaries, including Pecos and Nueces River. The name "Rio Grande" had already been used by early Texans to refer to all these rivers collectively because they flowed through what is now Hudspeth County. The original American settlement in this area was called Frio (Frio) Townsite but it soon became known as Río Bravo because so many pioneers from San Antonio came here to prospect for gold during the 1840s and 1850s that parts of Hudspeth County were also called San Bernadino or Sánchez Valley after some early settlers who established themselves there. In 1867, when Hudspeth County was created from land donated by Mexican citizens who had fled Porcupine Hill during the Mexican-American War, Río Bravo's name reverted back to Frio Townsite while other portions of Hudspeth County continued to be named San Bernardino or Sánchez Valley until 1898 when they were changed again - this time finally to Rio Grande City proper. The first post office in Rio Grande City opened on December 12, 1836, with Elisha Blythe serving as first postmaster general; he resigned due to health concerns a few months later. By 1860, there were fifteen post offices in Río Bravo Township; however only four served more than one town within their jurisdiction- all except one closed within ten years due to financial difficulties brought about by California Gold Rush fever which began around 1848 and swept across much of North America at this time; even today many residents in areas such as Floresville still refer to themselves simply as " rancheras" (country people). However most everyone living outside towns received mail from just one address: Río Bravo Post Office near present day Robles Street on the south side of main downtown square.
