It became an important U.S. border town after General Bonham's victory at El Paso in 1846. In 1861, Rio Grande City became an American Civil War battlefield because it was the location from which Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered his army to cross the River Brazos into Mexico for its attempt to overthrow President Abraham Lincoln. Following the war, Rio Grande City declined as a major trade center due to decreased demand for goods shipped through Mexico and increased supplies available from North America via Buffalo Bayou. However, it regained some importance as a commercial center after NAFTA was ratified in 1993 and since then has seen significant growth with several new businesses being established within its boundaries. Additionally, Rio Grande City has become an increasingly popular tourist destination due to its scenic attractions including its many lakes, hills and valleys; relaxed atmosphere; diverse architecture; art galleries; historical sites such as Chapultepec Castle and Mission San Fernando Rey de las Vegas; numerous golf courses; public schools including Rio Grand Community High School (grades 9-12), Arroyo Hills Independent School District (grades 7-12),[1] two universities (Texas A&M University–Commerce [now part of Rice University] and Southern Methodist University) located in downtown Rio Grande City[2];[3][4][5] as well as several dozen smaller parks.[6]

Rio Grande City is a city in southern Texas, United States. The population was 21,872 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. Rio Grande City is on the lower Brazos River and owes its name to the Rio Grande which forms its eastern border. The first Europeans to visit what is now Rio Grande City were Spanish explorers in 1540 who named it Ciudad de México (Mexico City). The area that would become Rio Grande City was part of Mexico until 1821 when Texas became an independent country and later annexed by the United States. In 1845, after Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna tried to force American settlers out of Texas with military action, riverside towns such as San Antonio and Austin formed militias to protect themselves from Santa Anna's troops. These frontier townspeople founded what would become known as "Rio Grande" because of their proximity to the river. On October 30, 1850, General Sam Houston granted land east of Nacogdoches Creek for a new city called Houston. On November 7, 1860, during the American Civil War, Union forces burned down Houston's old courthouse and replaced it with a newer structure built in Gothic Revival styleê which served as headquarters for Union forces in East Texas during the war effort. In 1865–1866Houston organized what became known as "the Reconstruction era" in America following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and began creating institutions such as public education and healthcare that helped preserve white supremacy throughout most of America following Reconstruction period. After Ulysses S Grant was elected President in 1868 he ordered all federal troops withdrawn from East Texasto prevent any further integration between black Americans and Native Americans; this policy continued into World War II when Japanese-Americans were interned without trial or compensation within concentration camps located throughout North America under Project Ozawa
In 1846, the United States acquired Texas from Mexico. The Lone Star State became a republic, and Austin became its capital. In 1878, the city was named for Francisco Villa, an Mexican general who had fought in the Mexican-American War. On July 6 of that year, American forces stormed the city and took it by force, putting an end to Mexican rule in Texas. Austin became America's first municipio (town) on July 12 of that year.
