Rio Grande City is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Rio Grande River in Webb County. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The name "Rio Grande City" comes from Adobe Walls which was built by Antonio López de Santa Anna as part of his campaign against Mexican rebels in 1836-37, and later served as the capital of Mexico for a time afterindependence from Spain. Spanish settlers arrived in what is now Webb County in 1835 and named it San Antonio del Rio Grande (or "Stronghold of the Rio Grande"). On July 8, 1846, General Sam Houston sent 5 companies of Texans under Colonel John Fagan to establish an arsenal and garrison at Camp Bowie near present-day downtown Austin to prevent Mexican gained control over much of central Texas during their war with Mexico over independence from Spain. The arsenal was called Fort Hood because Colonel Fagan had died while trying to take it on October 6, 1840; however no fortification ever resulted from this operation because Mexico withdrew from Texan territory two days later. In 1861 following Confederate entry into Texas as part of the American Civil War, most inhabitants left for Arkansas or Missouri due to pro-slavery sentiment then running high throughout most southern states following secession From here until 1924 there were only sporadic attempts by people living within present day Rio Grande City limits to return home: In 1922 one family made an attempt but they returned less than a year later when all members except one moved away again due to economic troubles brought about by world riots that began that year). However since then many residents have periodically come back just for weddings or other reasons (mainly around cultural events like Brazosfestivals). The first post office opened in 1907 and closed its doors in 1978 although some mail continued being delivered through private carriers until 1984 when TXU received federal funding to open up their own post office building which still provides service today (though local delivery has been discontinued since 2007). Today's economy is primarily based on agriculture with modest industry presence especially given that Dallas/Fort Worth lies across the state line; however some new development has taken place such as Spring Branch Ranch which straddles both sides of I-10 eastbound near downtown and Spring Branch Village which straddles Interstate 20 westbound just south of town center - making it easy access to many grocery stores and restaurants located close by while also housing a few large businesses including spring branch ranch Independent School District #1's library (one side also houses additional retail space)
