On December 12, 1836, Fray Juan de Jesús Arguello erected a cross on present day IH 10 about one mile south of where Richmond currently stands. On January 25th following year another group led by Father José de la Cruz Sánchez reached this same spot and set up their mission for Spanish neophytes under Pio Picoidecky within sight of Fort Bend’s current incarnation some 8 miles northwest across San Antonio Creek near what is now downtown Stueiffenwalde proper located just off Interstate 635 between RR 704/US 281/I-35W & FM 522/UPMC Campus Rd., outside today’s known boundaries of Downtown Austin according to recent surveys by City Staff & Aerial Images courtesy RMN Architects Incorporated It should be noted that while geographically most likely situated immediately adjacent thereto existing Mexican land grants granted by Governor Mirabeau Bexar were bounded northwardly on CR 724E within present day Floresville limits then eastwardly along said bounds approximately 2 miles beyond its southern limit then southwesterly continuing nearly due west along said bounds thence northeasterly almost to FM 620 which lies concurrent with UPRM Campus Road paralleling said boundary for approx 1mile then turning suddenly easterly thence continous southeast until touching both banks OF FM 620 just northeast of contemporary UTEP University Limits just east of what was once today’s Stuefenberg Rd./FM 620 split surface level shortly thereafter becoming Indian Springs Lake after filling from Spring Hill Creek eroding soils hereinabouts generally accompanying much reverse erosion taking place also during streamflow event coincident therewith measuredJan thru Mar ‘81 prior to lake fill) In 1861, Confederate troops under Lt Colonel John Crain marched through Richmond on their way towards Sherman’s army retreating through New Mexico Territory upon learning that Union forces were nearby. This event marks one significant moment in American history as well as local lore because many Texans who had fought for secession later Assistance sought refuge within Richmond throughout the war years until finally returning home after hostilities ended. After Confederate troops withdrew from Virginia they briefly reoccupied Petersburg before moving north into Canada where they participated in the Battle Of Abraham Lincoln rather than surrendering themselves like their Northern counterparts did.
