Richmond was founded in 1836 by James Fenton and his wife, Eliza C. Fenton. It became the capital of the Republic of Texas in 1841. The city was named for General Robert E. Lee, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and at the Battle of San Jacinto. Richmond was annexed by Dallas in 1907 and became a part of that city's government.
