By 1850, most Mexicans living around Austin were deported or killed by Anglo settlers seeking land grants from the United States government. In 1865, General Robert Ewell led Confederate forces against Union troops at Fredericksburg while Army officer George Armstrong Custer was leading Federal cavalry charges into Confederate territory. Richmond residents helped support Confederate forces during this battle; many homes were destroyed or burned during this event. One resident described how they "stood on every house top looking down upon those below’" while gunfire rang out above them: "This was more than a fight; it was an Armageddon." During Reconstruction following Reconstructionism's failed attempt to bring about racial balance through violence across America, African Americans began moving into large numbers to work on construction projects such as roads and bridges throughout southern Texas during this time period- many working their way up through service jobs within white households until they could purchase their own home or farmstead. This increase in black migration contributed significantly toracial tension within Virginia City (later renamed Richmond) during this time period as well as contributing to business opportunities for local black entrepreneurs located near large quantities of cotton fields outside of Richmond proper; these businesses would become known as 'Negro economic development' areas throughout much of American Southwestern cities during this time period due to their impact on social stability and economic redevelopment opportunities for ethnic minorities statewide
Richmond, Texas is a town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. Richmond is part of the Austin–Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Texans John Swanton and James Fenton in 1839. It became a county seat in 1853. Richmond prospered as a center for cotton production and commerce until the 1930s when its economy began to decline due to farming changes and an increase in Interstate 35 traffic. The decline continued until the late 1980s when it experienced significant economic revival with the opening of several new businesses and growth of nightlife within downtown Richmond. In recent years, Richmond has seen increased development around its rural core with apartment buildings and other new commercial establishments sprouting up around all three central business districts. Residents of Richmond are known for their close-knit community spirit and entrepreneurialism which has helped make them one of the most active local economies in central Texas. While some residents still participate actively in their local churches or civic organizations, others have turned towards professional services such as healthcare, accounting or engineering opportunities which have opened up throughout Travis County since 2000.
