Richmond has been a center of gun sights history for over 125 years. It is home to the oldest continuously operating rifle range in Texas and also the second oldest pistol range in the Lone Star State. The site where today’s Richmond Rifle Range stands was once a challenge field that served as training ground for Confederate cavalry officers during the American Civil War. After the war, this land was donated to Richmond by businessman and politician James Witherspoon. Witherspoon envisioned his city’s future as an agricultural center, so he developed this land into what is now known as Richmond Park. In 1878, Witherspoon donated additional land to the city on which today’s rifle range sits. This plot of land still contains many acres of forest and open space, perfect for practicing shooting skills with firearms. Today, you can find rifles from all eras at our facility – from frontier revolvers to modern sporting shotguns. In addition to its role in firearm training and research, Richmond also contains several museums dedicated toGun Sight history. There is no standardization of gun sight design, and the history of sights in Richmond, Texas is diverse. Richmond, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Richmond County. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 66,526. The city is named after Confederate general Robert E. Lee, who fought in the American Civil War and died there in 1865. Richmond was founded as an agricultural community on what is now called Belle Isle by Methodists from North Carolina in 1847. It grew quickly due to its location on Major William Byrd's sugar plantation near San Antonio and its access to natural resources such as oil and cotton plantations nearby. In 1872, Richmond became the capital of Texas when Austin was moved from San Antonio to become the new state capital. On July 6, 1901, Houston annexed Richmond into its city limits creating a combined statistical area with a population of over 300,000 people that continues to this day (Houston has since annexed more municipalities). Gun sights are devices that allow the shooter to aim an object by sighting it in from a distance. The history of gun sights goes back to at least the 16th century, when firearms were designed primarily for use with bows and arrows. One of the earliest devices used to sight in Firearms was a crossbow sight known as a “jungle jag” because it could be attached directly to the bowstring. This device consisted of two circles that fit into each other like a pair of sunglasses, and were aimed by depressing one circle while keeping the other depressed. A number of different designs were developed over time, but the basic principle remained the same: you took your target picture by sighting both circles together and depressing them at the same time so they formed an image on your retina; then you just released enough pressure on both circles so that their images lined up correctly, and you could hit your target.
