Richmond, Texas is home to the oldest operational handgun range in the Lone Star State. The Range opened in 1936 and has been continuously operating ever since. Richmond, Texas was founded in 1836 by James Fenton and his family. The city was named for the Prince of Wales who had donated land to the area. The Fenton brothers were the first owners of a grist mill in Richmond. In 1845, they built a cotton gin on what is now Bank Street. They also became one of the first businesses to open up in Richmond when they opened the First National Bank there in 1849. In 1860, Richmond became an independent republic under President Abraham Lincoln and was renamed Arlington Heights after General Robert E. Lee's home town in Virginia. The city hosted over 100 military engagements during the Civil War including two Battles of Richmond which resulted in Confederate losses totaling 620 casualties with only four Union soldiers killed or wounded among them.

In 1836 settlers arrived in what would become Richmond after being granted land west of San Antonio by General Sam Houston; they were under Governor Henry Smith’s command when they arrived as part of a force sent against Santa Anna’s forces several weeks earlier near Red River Valley before crossing into what is nowtx., On October 13th 1836 some 400 families had gathered around Captain John Biddle’s well while supplies lasted at Randolph Station – thenceforth known as “Richmond settlement” or “West Point Colony” – becoming members either voluntarily or involuntarily when word reached them that violence against Indians would continue if they did not leave their homes within two days; soon enough news spread that 500 families including women and children had followed Colonel Brown upriver past San Marcos Landing where he erected his military fortifications; Captured Indian Chief Manuel de la Peña surrendered his village site[1][2] four days later without any further bloodshed taking place until… September 9th 1837 when orders arrive for all men leaving for Texan side[3]; also included among those departing were most immediately associated with Portsmouth Plantation: James McDowell(a planter), John Hill(servant), Nicholas McGrew(farmer/butcher), Charles Goodrich(contractor)[4], Joshua Frye(builder)[5], Isaac Beal (surveyor)[6], George Ledbetter(* surgeon*) who became one agent with Hidalgo County Militia [7][8] Captain John Biddle organized 150+ family + women & children hiked 14 miles upstream past S Marcos Landing then Col Brown built Military Fortification - Father James McDowell helped load cannons etc.– Sept 9 th 1837 orders send everyone home—James McDowell & others went off American Side

The town has a population of over 105,000 people and sits on the bank of the Trinity River. Richmond was originally known as Killeen, after its original founder, but it became an important city in central Texas during the 19th century due to its location on railroads and its trade with Mexico City and other parts of South America. In 1865, Richmond became one of thirteen cities in what is now Corpus Christi County when it was annexed by that county from Galveston County. From 1892 until 1907, Richmond served as the capital ofTexas under Governor James A. Hogg. After Hogg's death, his successor Waco took control of this position until Austin took over in 1907. During Austin's term as governor, he developed plans to build a new capital called Cedar Hill which would have been located on Cedar Creek near today's Richards Bayou park. However, these plans never came to fruition because Austin was impeached and removed from office before they could be put into action. Instead, Austin built his final home at Montrose Park in 1909 and continued to live there until his death two years later at age 83 years old. AtAustin's death, Richards Bayou served as Austin's final resting place alongside those of many other famous Texans including Sam Houston (the first President ofthe RepublicofTexas), John Connally (the Vice Presidential candidate for Richard Mankiewicz’s run for President against Lyndon Johnson), Robert Ewing (founder/CEO/Chairman/PresidentofDallas Cowboys)and more...
