In 1898, following World War I, Austin City Limits began operations at the old Adelphi Theater on West 5th Street in Austin TX This live music venue was home to such acts as Buddy Holly (billing himself as "The Lone Star Gunman"), Elvis Presley (whose manager recommended him to play at ACL), Jerry Lee Lewis (whose manager suggested he play at ACL) and Little Richard (whose managers recommended him to play at ACL). The success of ACL led to other venues being established throughout Austin including Regal Ballroom on Commerce Street and Hutto’s Place on First Street which hosted country music concerts with performers like Willie Dixon and Johnny Cash while also hosting night clubs like Texan Party House These night clubs were often raided by law enforcement agencies who raid these establishments because they considered them illegal gambling dens In 1990 AT&T Field took over this property from League Of American Bicyclists who had been using it for baseball games
