The Richardson area was first settled in 1845 by European Americans as part of the Texas Railroad Company. The town was founded on a salt lick at the junction of the Richardson and Flower rivers. The town name is derived from a creek that ran through it. The early settlers used animal hides to lubricate their guns, rifles, and pistols. In 1851, a store was built in Richardson and this became one of the most important businesses in the community. Gunsmiths from surrounding towns came to work for Richardson merchants. In 1865, rifle manufacturer John Brown & Sons moved to Richardson from Wichita, Kansas and started making rifles there. In 1871, gunsmiths Thomas Bigham and George Purdy opened a shop in Richardson that became one of the most successful gun shops in Texas. In 1911, gunsmith Hiram Maxim bought Brown & Purdy’s shop and continued to operate it until his death in 1915. From then on until World War II, Richardson’s only major firearms manufacturer was Maxim Firearms Corporation which produced machineguns and other firearms products under contract to various military forces around the world.

The first settlers in Richardson were families from Kentucky and Tennessee who came downland during the 1830s looking for land to farm. They found some good land but also experienced many challenges because of their proximity to Mexico and its hostile inhabitants. In 1836, Captain John Richardson decided to settle down in what is now Richardson because he thought it would be a better place than where he had been living before. He started out building a small cabin near what is now downtown Richardson. In 1840, Captain John's son Sam purchased 640 acres (247 hectares) north of today's downtown Richardson from Juan de Zaldivar y Arregui for $500 cash plus 10% interest each year until sold back to him at final purchase price of $1,000 ($10 per acre). This area became known as "Zaldivar Rancho". There are still several residences from this time period standing today including Lady Allan House which overlooks Houston Boulevard; Calhoun House which stands on an old cotton plantation that ran along Rice Road; and White Oak Drive which runs between Lady Allan House and Calhoun House. In 1845 Abraham Lincoln was born in neighboring Wichita Falls (now Wichita), Kansas Territory on Ulysses S Grant's family estate southeast of present day Dallas/Fort Worth Airport (the Richardsons had moved there earlier that year). When Union General Ulysses S. Grant took command of all Union forces east of the Mississippi River after Vicksburg was surrendered on April 9, 1865, he ordered Lieutenant Colonel James Hogg (of Company K US Cavalry) commanding Rangers under his command organized into brigades under Major General David Ewell to march westward across Louisiana toward Tip Top Lake about 25 miles northwest of Jacksonport off State Highway 3 about midway between Jasper and Duncanville Junction,, thence northeast across Big Prairie Hills parallel with Interstate 20widening atemporal Chopwaters Creek valley to intersect just above present day Haskell Springs Creek east side thereof Map No 7 shows boundary lines following river course less wooded & open country Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge

However, economic decline followed until 2000 when Richardson's mayor declared bankruptcy and lost control of the city government.
