Richardson, Texas is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,719 at the 2010 census. Richardson is home to the historic Richardson Hotel and Grounds. The hotel was renovated in 2006 and now offers modern guestrooms with air conditioning and televisions. It also features an exhibit hall that can seat up to 375 people. The first settlers in Richardson came from Missouri in 1827. They named their new community after Richard Richardson, a governor of Tennessee who had come toTexas as a surveyor in 1826. By 1830, the town had grown to include 143 pioneers living on six tracts of land grants from the Mexican government. In 1836, James Denton founded Midland cattle ranching operations that would later become known as Denton Rancho Santa Fe de la Selva (Denton Ranch). Richardson became part of Midland County during this time. In 1840, Richardsonschool opened its doors for students from rural areas north of Houston (Midland School District #1). From 1840-1860, Dickinson College served as the primary school for residents of Richardsonsouthwest side until it closed due to financial difficulties in 1862. However, Richardson's first church - First Presbyterian - was built soon thereafter on what is now Elm Street near Trustee Avenue (now University Boulevard) within what is now Midland High School District #2 boundaries; it was dedicated on October 6th of that year by Rev John Sevier and his wife Caroline Sevier with Reverend A C Robertson officiating at the service conducted by Mr Geo Foulkes sr., superintendent of schools for Brazos Valley district which included portions of Hidalgo county including parts of Richardsonsouthwest side then part of Midland district! Prior to this event there were only three private homes east or west side Of Elm Street between Now University Boulevard And Trustee Avenue; these were Mrs Foulkes' hacienda "Elm View", Mrs Wm Vickers' "Missionary Ridge" & Dr J M Rankins' "Alamo Heights"! During this period few businesses ventured out into south Houston other than groceries being carried door-to-door by men on horseback since carts could not navigate through mudflats covered with cactus and prickly pear cactus! One notable early business owner was George Garton who began selling saddles in 1840 & he operated an early post office which met on current Main Street opposite Denny's Chinese restaurant! By 1850 Richtersonsouthwest side contained 7 stores including 2 banks one cotton gin & several saw mills some miles east along Buffalo Bayou! Many important events occurred during this time such as: 1) James Polk became President when he won election November 8th 1848 after winning the popular vote against Andrew Johnson 2) Cotton gin production increased dramatically leading to increased demand for cotton yarn & finished goods 3) On February 14th 1850 Captain James Kenedy aka Jim Bowie arrived at Harlingen Ferry Landing with 44 horses carrying mail for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna 4) Preston Tucker arrived from Yazoo City Arkansas via Galveston claiming right to explore Texan Gulf Coast 5) Post Office established at corner Uvalde Road/McLaren Road about two miles northeast corner Of Main Street HEAVILY populated area compared To Today In 1865 General Sam Houston ordered all male citizens over 21 years old must join him army or be drafted into Confederate army during American Civil War On December 20th 1865 MajorGeneral Stephen Hennessy relieved General Houston after 10 months command because he could no longer handle continuous combat This event marked end regular military hostilities between Texans & Unionists ended war which had lasted more than 6 years
Richardson was founded in 1827 by John Richardson. The first post office in the town was established in 1829. Richardson became a city in 1865 and was named for Richardson, a Scottish-born settler who had arrived in Texas in 1837. The population of Richardson peaked at 20,000 during the early 21st century, but has since declined significantly.
