The Richardson, Texas-based bipod company was founded in 1945 by two friends, John and Dick Shearer. The company specialized in designing and manufacturing infantry support platforms for the U.S. military. In the early days of the Iraq War, Richardson-based bipods were critical to the success of Operation Neptune's Spear, which was a ground offensive operation against Saddam Hussein's regime. As required by regulations at that time, bipods were not allowed on equipment used in combat on Iraqi soil. Although bipods had been produced by other companies before 1945, Shearer and John's invention was the first successful design to be marketed nationally as a self-loading rifle platform designed specifically for use with a bipod attachment device. The original model of the bipod consisted of three legs that could be easily removed for use with an attached tripod or monopod. Over time, additional models have been developed including a cantilever arm design that allows for greater elevation/orientation flexibility while using a tripod; and a "lightweight" version designed for mobile weapon systems such as artillery pieces or armored personnel carriers (APCs). Today, Richardson-based bipods are still manufactured in small quantities but are increasingly being used worldwide due to their ability to provide stable shooting platforms when deployed in difficult environments or when working with lighter weapons systems such as shotguns or handguns. Eventually these specialization caused those with better equipped weapons and armor to become dominant over those without such advantages (known today as warring parties). The town was named after General Andrew Jackson Richardson who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became governor of Texas. The Richardsons were among the first settlers in what would become Richardson County, TX. The townsite had been originally surveyed by Capt. Jethro Hogg in 1827 but never built on because it was too swampy to be useful as a settlement. In 1879, James Richardsonand Anna Ladd Richornia organized a group of investors to purchase land north of present day Richardsontown limits and build a new settlement on the site that they christened "Richardson". The company name for their new community was First Colony Company Limited which still exists today as an independent business entity headquartered in downtown Richardson with over 150 employees statewide. On December 25th 1881, President George Washington Carreon signed legislation creating First Colony Company Limited as an organization exempt from state corporate taxation within 30 days or face criminal forfeiture proceedings commenced against them by then Attorney General George Wickersham Jr.. By 1893, First Colony Company Limited had developed into what is now known as Richardson Incorporated with over 850 employees statewide including many local farmers and entrepreneurs who helped develop the town into one of its most thriving communities during its early years
