Ammunition manufacturing has been a part of Richardson's economy for over eighty years, and today it remains one of the city's most important industries. Ammunition production began in Richardson in 1903 when Prentice Allen and his sons founded the Allen Rifle Company. The company produced ammunition for the U.S. military during World War I and World War II. Today, Richardson's arsenal produces many different types of ammunition including rifle rounds, shotgun rounds, handgun rounds, and self-propelled artillery rounds. In addition to its namesake industry, Richardson also boasts an impressive array of museums that focus on firearms and ammunition history. The Museum of American Firearms features displays on all aspects of gunpowder manufacture from early days to contemporary arms races; while the Museum of Ammunition History tells the story of how lead bullets have helped shape America's battlefields since 1800; both are open tothe public every day from 9am to 4pm (except Saturday).

In 1865, Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed a cartridge that would use small rounds instead of balls for firing pistols and rifles; this led to the development of modern ammunition shooting techniques such as matchlock pistols or rifle powder magazines. The area that Richardson now occupies was first settled by the Native Americans in the early 1800s and was named after James Richardson, an American Revolutionary War general. The first settler in Richardson was John W. Richardson, who built a house on what is now Main Street in 1853. In 1865, George Richardsons son, James W., founded what is now Richardson College. From its inception until it closed in 1969, Richardson College served as one of two universities for East Texas. In 1916, when East Texas became a State of Texas and Richardsons college merged with Austin University to become Austin-Amarillo Community College, Richardson became the second largest community university in East Texas behind Amarillo University. In 1967, after years of negotiation and investment from local boosters, Fort Worth Health Science Center (now Fort Worth Medical School) was constructed at what is now Interstate 35 and South Loop Rd. In 1984, Richardson-Fort Worth Combined Federal Hospital opened as the largest combined healthcare facility west of Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. Additionally, during this time Richardsons colleges were renamed – North Central Technical Institute (now known as Midwestern Technical Institute), Southwestern Tech (now known as Westlake Technology Inc.), and Western Tech (now known as Angelo State University). On July 1st 1999 Richtersons Colleges merged with Lamar Community College to form Lamar Community & Technical College which remains today one of Americas top five technical schools
