The name Richardson comes from Jesse Richardson, who built a cabin here in 1836. The first post office in Richardson was founded on July 6, 1855. It was called Post Officeville and served the towns of Black Mesa and Sherman until it was renamed Richardson on December 3, 1907. The first store in Richardsons began trading goods on May 1, 1903. In 1950, the main highway that runs through town was named for General William T. Sherman (1823-1915), who fought during the Mexican-American War and later became Ulysses S. Grant’s secretary of war under President Abraham Lincoln (1865-1897). In January 1899, Mayor James Wetherbee resigned after being accused of accepting bribes from railroad executives to delay plans to build a new train station at junction with Utopia Road near downtown Richardsonshire; he had been mayor since 1896 when incorporation of Comanche County occurred. He had been elected to his position by popular vote not because he possessed any qualifications for office but rather because incumbent Tom Dooley refused to run again for reelection against him despite being term qualified by law Thereafter Wetherbee unsuccessfully ran for election as an independent candidate . In 1902 Richardsonshire voters approved a resolution calling for prohibition (); this measure legalized drinking without buying immunity from arrest or conviction . A second referendum passed three years later endorsed annexation into Dallas County (). On November 5th 1906 citizens of Richardson voted 71% to 29% in favor of forming their own government within Dallas County - this act marked the beginning of what would become known as the Richardson Demolition Derby campaign led by then Supervisor Adolphus Busch (1877-1957). After months of campaigning Busch won handily with over 60% of the vote against challenger John Hargrave (20%). This event helped spur further development within Richardson and its surrounding communities including growth in business and industry while alsoKeystone Broadcasting Company moved its headquarters from downtown Dallas to Richfield following their purchaseof KERA radio station out east In 1916 Businessman Art Jones donated land north of Highway 183 which became home to Richardsonshire Community Park; this park remains one today
