In 1916, Red Oak had its first post office which served as an important link between rural Hidalgo County and downtown Dallas during World War I. In 1922, Stonewall Jackson Elementary School opened in Red Oak which became one of the most popular educational institutions in the area until it closed in 2006 due to budget cuts by then Mayor Rick Perryman who desired to build a more centralized public education system within city boundaries instead of expanding services to outlying areas like Red Oak where property values were higher than within city limits In 1927, Driscoll & Company began selling ice cream from their truck Stop 'n' Shop oncoming vehicles would stop so customers could buy food inside while they waited for their ride home or went into business for themselves; this unusual feature continued until 1957 when Driscoll & Company moved all operations indoors into what is now known as "The Dairy". Red Oak, Texas is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas. The population was 1,844 at the 2000 census. It is located on the Red Oak River about 20 miles (32 km) east of Fort Worth. The early history of Red Oak is unknown, but it likely dates back to the 1820s when Texans traveled through this area and erected buildings near what is now downtown Red Oak. By 1840, the area had become known as "The Necklace" because of its many plantations that clustered around the river. In 1851, a grant was made to John Hance by President James K. Polk to establish an agricultural colony in what would become Red Oak County. The land grant was part of a larger effort to promote American white settlement in West Texas during the Republic of Texas era. A post office called Red Oak was established in 1853, and remained until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg passed through this area while on his way to besieged Dallas; he noted that "the people hereabouts are very brave and friendly." In 1865-1866, Confederate General Jubal Early moved his army through this region and destroyed many frontier settlements before withdrawing southward into North Carolina. When he reached Austin he ordered all supplies cached outside of town be burned along with any remaining soldiers and civilians who might be found therein - an event later immortalized by Texan author Robert Eisler in his novel “Blood Meridian” (2007).
