Red Oak is a town in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name "Red Oak" may be derived from theoak tree that grows there. The first white person to live in Red Oak was James Vann Woodward, who came overland from Kentucky in 1837. He and his family lived on a farm near present-day White Rock Lake until 1840 when he built a cabin on an island in White Rock Lake that he named Red Oak after his plantation's main tree on his land. Woodward also helped found Mesquite (now Irving) in 1845 and served as its first mayor in 1846. In 1890, brothers Chas. Wm., Jesse Ln., and John Wm. Sell were the first farmers to grow cotton in Red Oak Township when they bought land east of Clayton Road for $1 per acre ($27 per foot). They began planting cotton into 1915 and developed it into what is now one of the largest cotton plantations in North Texas with more than 150 acres (60 hectares) of land irrigated using ditches and canals system called the Old Plantation System. In 1930, ownership passed from Chas.Wm., Jesse Ln., and John Wm.'s son John Sell to their grandson Cecil Sell; Cecil's son became president of Brown Shoe Company which owned most of Red Oak township by 1951 before selling it to developers for $35 million (raised since). sell left White Rock Township as well but kept some trees on his plantation which are still available for public viewing today through tours led by Preservationists working with Historic Home & Garden Foundation

Red Oak is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first people to live in Red Oak were Arapaho Indians who arrived in 1836. The settlers included John Andres and his wife Eliza with their children and her brother James Andres. They raised chickens, pigs, horses and cattle on what is now the eastern edge of town. In 1840 they founded a post office called Red Oak which lasted until the early 1870s when it was moved to Willacy County (now Hidalgo County). In 1853 there was an effort by some white men to drive the Arapaho out of Texas by erecting a fence around their reservation. This failed because many of the Arapaho did not want to leave their land that had been home for centuries. A group of African Americans from Louisiana settled near Red Oak in 1865 after being invited by General William Tillery as part of his Americanization efforts in East Texas during Reconstruction. Many black Texans living outside East Texas felt welcome into this new community but few actually participated in its development because most were already contributing members of white society through work or farming skills they had acquired while living elsewhere. In 1907 a fire destroyed most of downtown Red Oak but not before beginning construction on what would become one of America's largest department stores then known as "the White House". The earliest occupants of what became known as "the White House" consisted onlyof Mr and Mrs Wm Bancroft who lived upstairs next door to General Signal Corps Colonel George Armstrong Custer's widow Emmy Ewing Custer & her son Gus Custer & her daughter Gertrude Alice Keyes who together ran Gertrude Alice's dress shop downstairs thru 1969-. When headquarters moved uptown following World War II it converted into an apartment complex called Green Integer where current Mayor Wendy Davis lives today with her husband Louie along with other elected officials including State Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson & Unexpired Members District 9 incumbent Darrell Issa
