Red Oak is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 579 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1876 and named for an oak tree that grew near their settlement. Red Oak owes its name to its color - it is a light red - which may be derived from the Spanish word "el rojo" or "the red". The first settlers arrived in 1876 and soon built a cabin around what is now Main Street. They were farmers and ranchers who raised livestock and planted cotton, corn, and wheat. By 1900, Red Oak had a post office, five stores, two churches, one school, four homes (all with outbuildings), and seventy-six workers. In 1913, when Hudspeth County was formed from parts of Travis County, Red Oak became part of the new county seat. Over time it lost some of its agricultural support but continued to grow as an industrial center for printing products such as paperclips and buttons until World War II when production shifted to Mexico City due to America's war efforts.
