Red Oak is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Red Oak is located on the western edge of Hidalgo County and approximately east of downtown Austin. It is bordered to the north by Slaughtertown and to the south by Hillsboro Village. According to the USGS, Red Oak has an elevation of 653 feet (183 m). The climate in this area is classified as "warm summer humid". The community was founded in 1879 by John Sutter and his brother Jameson Sutter. They named their new settlement for a red oak tree that they saw growing near them on rancho San Miguel de Allende grant 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Red Oak on what is now Slaughtertown Road. At that time there were no towns in Hidalgo County and all citizens were employed by their farmers or ranch hands. In 1901, Jameson Sutter sold his interest in Rancho San Miguel de Allende to Thomas Edison for $10,000 dollars plus interests in other grants which gave him control over about .5 square miles (1 km²) including present-day Red Oak Township and parts of Hillsboro Village and Slaughtertown. By 1907, many businesses had been built around Edison's experimental electric lights testing ground just outside town limits: groceries stores flourished along Edison Street; schools operated out of individual homes; churches servicerolled with horsedrawn carts from one side of town to another; hotels offered their guests room service from dinner until morning tea; telephones linked entire villages together through long distance calls! So great was this development that Woodstock Cemetery Chairman Malcolm Cowley called it "Edisonville" because he believed so much had been accomplished thereby within short space! Red Oak is a small town in Victoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock–San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for an oak that grew near the present-day village site. settlers arrived in 1799 and called the place "Oakville," but it was known as Red Oak from 1814 to 1836. In 1830, Red Oakite James Hargrave built aLog cabin on what is now Elm Street. The first post office in Red Oak opened in 1833. In 1865, John Waco donated land to build a sawmill and gristmill around which the community developed. The mill became one of the largest employers in town with its six stories of water power and sixty acres (27 hectares) of landing ground for boats used by farmers and fishermen fishing in Brazos Bayou. In 1902, Citizens' Bank merged with First National Bank to form First National Bank & Trust Company of Texas; later that year, First National Banks merged with Southern Pacific Railroad to become Texan Telephone Corporation (TPSC). In 1939Texan Telephone Corporation merged with Western Electric Company to become TPSC again; this merger resulted in Browning Arms Manufacturing Incorporated becoming one of TPSC's primary businesses outside of phone sales and service activities primarily through its arm Texan Machine Workshops Incorporated (TMW). On November 15th 1984 Browning Arms Manufacturing Incorporated filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after years of financial strife caused by competition from IBM’s mainframe computer industry dominance; however Browning Arms survived until 1996 when it amalgamated into US Steel Corp., another mainframe computer manufacturer
