The town of Red Oak in Texas was founded in 1876. The first documented shooting in the area took place on October 6, 1881 when a man named John White shot and killed a possum near his cabin. Red Oak was chartered as a municipality in 1907. In 1916, the city had an estimated population of just over 2,000 people and began to annex adjacent rural areas. In 1934, Red Oak annexed the neighboring town of Aransas Pass which had a population of 5,000 people at the time. In 1937, Red Oak adopted its current name - Red Oak Village - after it won a referendum vote to become an incorporated municipality. Since then, Red Oak has experienced rapid growth and development with an expanding downtown area; multiple businesses and restaurants; growing numbers of residents; and increased access to public education and economic opportunities.

Red Oak was founded in 1836 by freed slaves and their families who had been transported from Africa on the brig "Oxford". The original settlers were farmers and planters, but after some time they began to sell land to railroads. In 1881, Red Oak became a city and has since grown into one of the largest communities in Johnson County. Many of its residents are descendants of those original pioneers. One of Red Oak's most well-known landmarks is Mount Pleasant Cemetery which is home to many notable Texans including Sam Houston, James Kuykendall and Lillie Mae Payne Whitney. Mount Pleasant also contains the ruins of an earlier cotton plantation called Elmendorf which was razed by order of Congressman John Tyler for not offering enough soil for cattle farming. Today, Red Oak features a variety of businesses including restaurants, convenience stores, banks and other retail outlets as well as several thousand homes that are used for both housing and recreational purposes. It was even possible to vary their size (for example, changing from an infantryman’s headshot silhouette into a moving machinegun silhouette) so that your firing line would always include both correctibles!

Ladd developed Red Oak into one of the most important towns withinvisionable distance of Dallas/Fort Worth during its early years as a frontier settlement. By 1850, there were over 200 residents living in RedOak while nearby Dallas had only 10 or so inhabitants

The post office was established in 1881, and the first store was built in 1884. In 1907, the railroad arrived to Red Oak, and the community became a part of the Huntsville Railroad system.
