Red Oak’s history dates back to 1836 when the community was founded by Captain Arthur Ashe and his wife Sarah Ann Brazelton. The Brazeltons were Anglo-American settlers who had come toTexas from England in 1827. They named their new settlement Red Oak after a big red oak tree that they saw near their farmstead on the banks of the Trinity River. The Brazeltons lived there for several years before leaving for other parts of Texas in 1835. The first school in Red Oak was built in 1840 by Drury and Mrs. John Ladd as a log cabin known as “Ladd School” because its founder, Reverend Ladd, taught there. In 1846, an donation from J P Ballentine enabled Red Oak Creek School District #1 to be formed which included White Settlement (later renamed Humble), East Spring Branch (later renamed Rossville), and parts of what are now Midland and Parker counties. A new school building was erected on Main Street in 1850 and dedicated by President James Kenedy with speeches by then-Governor Sam Houston and General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down the school building during a skirmish while it was being used as a military hospital; no one was injured but the property damage amounted to $10 worth of goods including furniture, tools, saddles, guns and ammunition!
