Red Oak is a small town in the Texas Hill Country, located about 20 miles northeast of Austin. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. Red Oak is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Red Oak’s history dates back to 1836 when Mexican traders first arrived in what is now Red Oak County. A log cabin was built on the banks of the Trinity River by General Antonio López de Santa Anna and his army during their drive from Mexico City to Austin, then Travis County. The first post office in Red Oak was established in 1839. In 1847, John Sowell opened a school for African Americans in what is now Green Oaks Elementary School. A Methodist church also served as a meeting place for Coloradans attending the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth until its merger with that congregation in 1901. The community acquired its current name from local red oak trees which were used for ammunition by Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After Texans ratified an amendment to the state Constitution providing for white only voting status, African Americans were able to vote starting on November 4th, 1865. The first black voter registered in Red Oak was James Hosea Washington who voted at that time as “John Witherspoon” at an election held under Section 5 of Article IX of Texas Constitution which allows citizens naturalized US citizens and aliens free access to vote without restriction or special requirements such as residence or income level. In 1870, work began on building what would become Applewhite School but due to funding shortages it did not open until 1876 after being rebuilt several times with increased capacity each time around $6,000 raised through popular subscription campaigns led by Mrs Jane Addams and other civic leaders including Judge David Starr Jordan Sr., future United States Senator from Texas In 1916 Mayor Fenton Cady announced plans for a new city hall suggesting that downtown might be moved out some distance because real estate prices had begun skyrocketing there seemed little alternative but annexation into Dallas according to business interests opposed thereto . On July 1st 1917 when annexation proceeded under city charter article III section 3 immediately following completion of new central jail (the old courthouse) parking lots surrounding original square between Main Street & 2nd Avenue became available south side of 2nd Ave east side
