Red Oak was founded in 1836 by James Fenton and his wife Anna Morton Fenton as a community on the banks of the Trinity River. The name may derive from "red oak" (Quercus robur) because of its color and high quality wood for carving. In 1847, Red Oak became an agricultural center when two brothers imported 8 acres (3 hectares) of oak trees from Kentucky to start a plantation here. The boomtown atmosphere that characterized Red Oak during its heyday disappeared after World War II when other parts of San Antonio County experienced more growth and development. However, some local businesses have continued to thrive such as The IGA Supermarket chain and locally made wines such as Muscatine Valley Pinot Noir and Zinfandel

Red Oak is a small town in the Unincorporated Marvel County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The community began as a small post office called Red Oak on November 16, 1881. At that time it was located in present-day San Marcos County. On October 1, 1892, it became an enclave within Travis County when Red Oak and its neighbor Spring Branch were combined to form a new county. Redding Post Office operated from 1865 to 1898; it had been renamed for John Reddington (1820-79), who served as U.S. Senator from California from 1859 to 1861 and again from 1872 to 1880. A post office was established at Redding on July 10, 1886, but it failed to open because of lack of mail flow due to Mexican American refugees coming into the area during this period of significant change in Texas history. The first settlers in what is now Red Oak were white men: Jeptha Jones and his family arrived in January 1883 and erected the first log cabin near present day US 83/IH 35A south of town on land grant issued by Sam Houston on February 5th that year while he still held popular status as governor of Texas after his victory over Mexico's Santa Anna campaign two months earlier. By 1888 there were seven families living in Red Oak with twenty eightesteads or homes scattered throughout the surrounding rural countryside including Spring Branch which at that time formed part of Travis County adjacent to Milam & Neches Counties east side along Buffalo Bayou just north of downtown San Marcos Falls today’s IH 35A bridge crossing Buffalo Bayou also known as Main Street crossed by Alice Streets three miles northeast corner current date Lakewood Drive home farmstead built about 1840 On October 1st 1892 when Red Oak became an enclave within Travis County with Spring Branch being combined with Milam & Neches Counties east side along Buffalo Bayou just north of downtown San Marcos Falls today’s IH 35A bridge crossing Buffalo Bayou also known as Main Street crossed by Alice Streets three miles northeast corner current date Lakewood Drive home farmstead built about 1840 some people decided they wanted their own place so they set up shop building their own homes outbuildings etc.; businesses started popping up soon such as a doctor’s office ( Dr James Hogg) grocery store ( Mrs Pugh) blacksmith shop( Wm Hogg) dry goods store( Geo Moody) bank ( First National Bank) school ( Fayetteville School District No 6). note: most all these existed before 1954 when annexation happened making this our “ pioneer era” red oak
Red Oak, Texas was founded in 1836 by Captain John F. Hogg and his wife Anna Polk. The town was named for the red oak trees that were found near the site of its founding. After serving as a wagon stop on the Santa Fe Trail, Red Oak became a settlement in Comanche County. In 1868, the county seat was moved to Red Oak from Longview due to population growth. The town experienced somegrowth during World War II; it became an air-base before being placed under military jurisdiction after the war.
