Other notable business owners include John Tighe (founder of Tighe’s Tobacco Warehouse), Abraham Lincoln (amaster distiller who owned several properties near downtown), George Hays (the founder of Jardine & Hays Fine Goods) and Salmon Peevey (presidential candidate). Although downtownPortland experienced rapid growth during its early years, there were also periodic periods when almost all commercial activity ceased becauseof lack of money or space – which can be seen in much older buildings like Anschutz Hall which functioned as a courthouse until 1907 but then sat vacant for several years while new structures were built nearby). Despite these problems, though occasional storefront closures did occur throughout DowntownPortland's history*, overall civilian life continued relatively uninterrupted*.
