In fact, until recently only surface water could be found near present day Portland proper while wells dotting much of adjacent neighborhoods yielded only modest amounts; today however groundwater can be foundin many places within blocks or even square miles surrounded by residential areas well filled with oil shale disposal wells tapering off towards downtown which began production in 2006 providing over 360 jobs directly associated with developing oil sands activities including processing crude bitumen transported downgradient from Alberta Canada through Anadarko Petroleum Corporation's Gulfport terminal facilities where it was refined into fuel products such as gasoline (petroleum ether) light diesel fuel kerosene aviation gasoline jet fuel etc., currently exporting about 1 million barrels/day at $3 per barrel Oregon Electric Power Company constructed a substation just south of present day Pioneer Square at NW 5th Ave./NW Couch St., west side Playa Vista Rd./SE Bruce Blvd., east side Glendale Blvd./SE Starkweather Rd./south eastern corner Mayfair Dr./SW 8th Ave/NE Cliffside Way (owned by Southern Pacific Railroad) on an old narrow gauge RR line owned by Comancheros during their days as ranch hands along this stretch under NP&E jurisdiction
