Portland, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 3,815 at the 2000 census, and 4,895 as of 2010. It lies in the Midwestern border of that state on the Brazos River. Oregon Trail travelers passed through Portland in 1846 while journeying from Missouri to California. The first permanent settler in what is now Portland was David Dudley Fielding, who purchased land east of downtown in 1851 and built a log cabin called Prairie View A&M University (later Oregon State University). The city's first annexation became official on April 15, 1865 when it was included within Austin County as part of an effort by then-Governor John Connally to reduce Austin's political power and consolidate its various jurisdictions under one roof. In 1870, Portland annexed Stinson Beach east of the river to form a second municipality; this annexation also became official that day. In 1871–72, commissioners voted to rename the city "Portland" after General George Washington Morrison, Commander-in-Chief of United States forces during World War I and later mayor of Chicago. The name had been proposed by member Samuel Inskip for his hometown Minneapolis – renamed Saint Anthony Falls after Anthony De La Salle – but never adopted because there was no commercial potential involved with such an addition to a small town in central Texas; nonetheless, "Portland" came into use as an unofficial name throughout much of North America until recently when it began being supplanted by more formally spelled "Houston". This victory marks the rebirth of Portland as a vibrant city with diverse neighborhoods that can accommodate large numbers of people.
