In 1886, Portland, Texas was founded by ranchers John L. Dietrich and his brother-in-law George H. Smith as a cattle ranching town. The city of Austin moved to the area in 1892 after a fire destroyed the local sawmill. By 1901, the post office had been renamed Portland in honor of General James K. Polk and it quickly became an important railroad junction and lumber center due to its location on the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1907, the Oregon Steel & Wire Co., which was based in Portland, founded a subsidiary called Western Pipe & Wire to manufacture pipeline and wire products from steel mills in California and Oregon. The company grew rapidly until World War II when it merged with another Portland-based company, American Pulp & Paper Co., which had also become interested in pipe production. After the war, Western Pipe & Wire continued to prosper thanks to its skilled workers but it went bankrupt in 1954 due to overproduction of pipe products at two Oregon mills combined into one entity called American Pulp & Paper Corp.). Portland’s success as a manufacturing center led to growth for other businesses too:Oregon Electric Cooperative formed in 1922; Northwest Rubber Products (later Rubbermaid) was established in 1926; Pioneer Natural Gas Corporation began operations near downtown Portland in 1927; Northwest Telesis Corporation was founded by entrepreneurs Harry Olson and Eugene Olson withinPortland’s limits in 1928 as a telecommunications company;and finally TriMet Airways Corporation opened its main airport east of downtownPortland on May 1st 1929 with plans to serve both Modoc County population centers (northwest of town) as well as Downtown Portland business districts (southwest of town).
