Portland, Texas is a small city located in southernmost Texas. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census and it lies within the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name Portland is said to come from an early settler named John Quincy Adams who came to the region in 1827. The city was founded by Edward Everett Hale in 1859 as a result of the Oregon Trail Expansion which linked Kansas City with California. At its peak, Portland had a population of over 100,000 people and it experienced rapid growth following World War II when industries such as petroleum shipping and aircraft manufacturing became important. However, today Portland is experiencing significant decline with its population falling below 10,000 for the first time since 1960. The history of Portland began with a group of pioneers who set out from Independence, Missouri on July 4th, 1859 to explore new land in what is now northeastern Texas. When they reached the present day Oregon Trail junction nearpresent-day Arlington heeding advice from his friend James Kenedy he decided to turn back and continue on the main trail that would lead him further south into Mexico. He instead journeyed east until reaching Delaware County where he met another American pioneer named Elijah Woodruff who also decided to return home before continuing on foot all the way to St Louis Missouri. After meeting up with Kenedy again at Delaware County Courthouse Hall they continued their journey eastward until they finally arrived at what is now downtown Portland on October 24th of that year after travelling over 350 miles (560 km). Oregon Trail settlers were greeted with hostility by local Native Americans who thought they were invaders seeking to take away their land. However, despite this initial opposition some Oregon Trail pioneers managed to build relationships with local leaders and eventually received permission from them for permanent settlement in what is now southeastern Texas starting in 1837. By 1840 most of these settlers had moved north into central Arkansas but two men – John Quincy Adams and Elijah Woodruff – remained behind to start a new town called Westport which would become known as Portland due to its proximity to maritime traffic along the Mississippi River trade route between New Orleans and Chicago during this period.).
