The name Portland was given to it by two Dutch settlers who named it Vlissingen after their hometown of Vlissingen, Netherlands. However, Mexican immigrants continued to send packages through his successor, Manuel Gomez de la Fuente y Valdez, until 1951 when all mail services were discontinued between Portland and Mexico City because of concerns about espionage activities by Mexican officials operating out of that city border towns! After years of growth (and some controversy) spurred by Expo '86 (the 1986 World's Fair), downtownPortland reached its current size with construction beginning on Union Station (now known as Pioneer Courthouse Square) in 1991 and finishing twelve years later on Mayflower Square across from McCaw Hall Elementary School! Downtown development continued apace following US TEXAS A&M's move into downtownPortland campus following unification with Texas A&M University; both institutions are still headquartered within downtownPortland today! Interstate 20 also served as a key artery for commerce during this time - prior to its renovation project which began in 2002–2003 & finished last summer – I-20 saw significant reworking including new streetscaping (& a brand new MAX line running along Broadway/I-20) throughout much of central/downtownPortland; finally paving things back up somewhat near Placer Street & Sandy Bridge Rd./US 30 just northwest thereof – making for an almost “streetless” CBD compared to today’s configuration! As recently announced viaCityofPortland website: “Downtown Development Update: June 2017” – noting increased foot traffic thanks largely to recent redevelopment projects; old buildings continue being renovated or replaced while new ones are being erected or purchased along many key corridors across NWsideofthestreetallowing more elbow room for expansion (& redevelopment)!
